YW Sheriff King Home

YW Sheriff King Home is a short-stay crisis shelter for women and their children (and their pets) leaving domestic abuse and violence. The shelter provides basic needs, including food and personal items, as well as individual domestic abuse counselling and support.

Brenda Stratfford provides short term and long-term housing options; along with counselling for the women and children.

Calgary Housing Company

Calgary Housing Company provides safe and affordable housing solutions to citizens of Calgary; operates and manages over 10,000 subsidized and affordable housing units and has a variety of housing options for low-income households including duplexes, townhouses and high-rise apartments.

They have long waitlist but they do offer rental subsidies if you have your own rental.

Food Security

Fresh Routes

Fresh Routes is a not-for-profit social enterprise that provides healthy and affordable food to those in need. Fresh Routes started as a pilot from the Leftovers Foundation, a food recovery and redirection program.

Society of St. Vincent De Paul

Society of St. Vincent De Paul provides food baskets and aid to individuals in need of financial support for basic necessities.

Pet Food and Supplies

Parachutes for Pets is committed to assisting low income individuals work toward better health and welfare for their pets through accessible programs and resources. They offer:

The Alex Community Food Centre

The Alex Community Food Centre (CFC) is a welcoming place that provides people with access to high-quality food in a dignified setting through healthy meals and an affordable produce market. They offer free programs for families and children. VIsit their website here.

Community Kitchen

The Community Kitchen Program of Calgary operates a self-empowering model to address the needs of marginalized Calgarians.

They have continually evolved over the years to meet the changing needs in Calgary, in response to their deepening awareness and understanding of the complex issues of poverty and hunger.

Calgary Food Bank

The Calgary Food Bank is the city’s main charitable food hub and the most accessible food bank. It is the first line of emergency food support for single moms and people facing crisis. If you need food call the hamper request line at 403-253-2055.

Health Canada – Children and Healthy Eating provides dietary guidance for mothers and babies and nutrition information from professionals.

Community Pantries (cannot guarantee supply)

Humble Harvest has pantries with free food throughout the city. Join their private Facebook page to find a pantry near you. Government Benefits and Supports

Alberta Child Health Benefit

The Alberta Child Health Benefit covers health benefits for children in low-income households. This health plan is for children up to 18 years of age. Children who are 18 or 19 years old also qualify, if they are living at home and attending high school.

Child Care Subsidy Program

The Child Care Subsidy Program offers eligible families subsidies for children up to grade 6 enrolled in a licensed facility-based program, a family day program overseen by a licensed family day home, or a group family child care centre. Subsidy rates vary based on the child’s age, family income, the child care program and the number of hours a child attends each month. 

Alberta Adult Health Benefit

Alberta Adult Health Benefit offers health coverage for individuals and dependents, including prescription coverage, eye exams/glasses, limited dental care, emergency ambulance services, and essential diabetic supplies.

Alberta Child and Family Benefit

The Alberta Child and Family Benefit (ACFB) provides direct financial assistance to lower and middle-income families with children under 18.

Family Support for Children with Disabilities

Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD) offers eligible families support and services based on each child and family’s needs.

Canada Dental Benefit

Canada Dental Benefit is an interim benefit for eligible families with children under 12 who do not have access to a private dental insurance plan.

Child and Youth Support Program

The Child and Youth Support Program (CYS) Program provides financial and medical benefits for a child when the parents/guardians are unable or unwilling to care for the child, and the child is being cared for in another home of an adult caregiver.

Alberta’s Income Support Program

The Alberta Income Support Program helps eligible individuals and families with basic living costs and other necessities.

Grocery Rebate

Grocery Rebate is a one-time government Grocery Rebate to provide financial support to eligible individuals and families. The rebate is scheduled to be issued July 5, 2023 alongside the next regular quarterly GST/HST credit payment.

Women’s Centre

The Calgary Women’s Centre provide women with quick access to basic needs items such as emergency food, and personal care supplies. We also offer referrals to other agencies for food, clothing, furniture, housing, health, employment, education and recreation.

BowWest Community Resource Centre

BowWest Community Resource Centre works with people who live in northwest Calgary, connecting individuals and families in need with support, referrals and educational programs.

CUPS

Cups and its partners will assist adults and families in Calgary living with the adversity of poverty and traumatic events to become self-sufficient. Cups offers a crisis intervention fund, a graduated rent subsidy program, and other programs.

The Red Cross

The Red Cross has a community housing support program, a one time financial assistance toward security deposits or eviction notices or utilities, a partial one-time payment for essential utilities (electricity or gas) when disconnection is a concern (between late fall and early spring only), and advocacy services to landlords or utility companies.

Alberta Supports offers financial assistance and services for seniors, children, people with disabilities, and individuals and families in crisis. One-time utility assistance with disconnection notice (may assist second time but requires repayment).

Burns Memorial Fund

Burns Memorial Fund administers the Children’s Fund (a private charitable foundation that supports low-income families and charitable organizations working with children).

Alberta 211

Calgary Housing Company

The Calgary Housing Company offers emergency support to individuals and families in financial crisis with a one-time grant (the Basic Needs Fund) to remedy an immediate need. Assistance through this program is meant to help individuals and families dealing with an emergency such as a sudden job loss or unexpected illness. This support can help individuals experiencing financial stress avoid having their situation get even worse.

Rise Calgary

Rise Calgary offers a Basic Needs Fund is an emergency financial assistance fund, intended to help people out of unforeseen crisis. The fund can be used to pay for rent arrears, utility arrears, damage deposit or first months rent when moving to a new premise.

The Jewish Family Services Centre

The Jewish Familly Services Centre offers a Basic Needs program is designed to address the effects of poverty by supporting individuals with food security and housing supports.

  • 211 is Canada’s primary source of information for government and community-based, non-clinical health and social services. The free and confidential service can be accessed 24 hours a day, in more than 150 languages, by phone, chat, text, and web. 211 helps connect people to the right information and services, making their pathway to care and resources a guided and trusted one. 211 is available by phone, chat, website, and text in different regions – dial 2-1-1 to connect to community services.

  • Calgary Counselling Centre provides compassionate, professional and affordable counselling services to Calgarians. Through counselling and group programs, the Centre helps individuals, couples, parents, families and youth resolve emotional and social programs. In-take can be done on the phone, online or through walk-in. Counselling fees are determined on a sliding fee scale. There is no waitlist. Upon completion of your intake form you will receive a call to set-up an appointment within 3 to 5 business days.

  • Anxiety Canada A leader in developing free online, self-help, and evidence-based resources on anxiety.

  • Distress Centre Calgary Free, short-term counselling services for individuals, couples and families. The Distress Centre has many highly trained volunteers and professional staff on hand for their 24/7 crisis line if you’re in need of a person to talk to privately.

  • Canadian Mental Health Association – Calgary Region Th Peer Support service provides the opportunity for anyone – individual, family member, or professional – to speak with someone with lived experiences of mental health or substance use concerns. By engaging with their Peer Support Workers, you can make a connection with someone with lived experience, increase your sense of engagement and belonging, and move through your recovery journey to develop skills and build resiliency.

Legal Aid Alberta

Legal Aid Alberta (LAA) is a publicly-funded non-profit organization providing accessible legal services in child welfare, domestic violence, family law, immigration, and youth and adult criminal defense.

Women’s Centre

The Women’s Centre in Calgary offers free clinics with female lawyers who provide advice for free. These lawyers volunteer their time to the Women’s Centre, to ensure more women are able to access legal advice no matter their economic situation.

These lawyers work to equip women with the information and options they ask for, so women can feel empowered and in control of their situations. The clinics provide advice on family issues, civil cases, immigration, and other types of law.

Legal Aid Guide for Canada offer information about programs across Canada that serve low-income people so that they are assisted and informed of their rights and options. 

Calgary Legal Guidance Centre

The Calgary Legal Guidance Centre offers a lawyer referral service and also provides free legal advice to people on a limited or low income but who do not qualify for legal aid.

Employment and Training Resources

YWCA Employment Resource Centre

YWCA Employment Resource Centre offers support developing resumes and cover letters, mock interviews, salary negotiations and creating an online professional presence. Learn how to search and apply for jobs online. Receive support with securing employment and maintaining employment.

Services are provided at no cost to unemployed or underemployed women (18 years old+) who need assistance, guidance and support to develop or enhance their employability skills.

Prospect Human Services

Prospect provides career, employment, and job placement information services to ALL Albertans, 18 and older. They offer fully accessible to Albertans with disabilities, support in either English or French.

Employment support includes finding employment, resume writing, practicing interview questions with mock interviews, and career exploration and advising.

Women Building Futures

Women Building Futures is a non-profit organization based in Edmonton, Alberta that offers programs and support services to help unemployed and underemployed women explore and connect to careers that pay above a living wage. Careers that not only support their own security but often that of their children.

They help remove common barriers to financial independence. These barriers include employment training, access to affordable housing, academic readiness, access to affordable childcare, and more.

Dress For Success

Dress For Success empowers women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and the development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.. Participants are offered gently used clothing and accessories at no cost to help them look and feel their best.

Participants must be experiencing financial barriers and in need of appropriate clothing  for interviews, new jobs, their current workplace, school or volunteer work. Participants must be referred by community serving agencies, pre-employment training programs or educational institutions in Calgary and the surrounding area. Participants may self-refer if they meet the appropriate criteria.

The Mustard Seed Employment Centre offers individual career coaching to anyone experiencing homelessness or barriers to employment and are motivated to find sustainable employment.

Aspen Family and Community Network Society — Provides help with tax returns on the current year. This feature is not advertised on the website.

CUPS Calgary Society — Free help with filling out and filing income tax forms that can be availed once a month.

Forest Lawn Library CVITP Tax Clinic by First Lutheran Church — Volunteers provide free tax returns for eligible individuals. They are able to prepare current and prior tax returns. First come, first serve and the client must have all tax slips and receipts.

The Alex Community

The Alex - The Alex Community Health Centre is a full-service health clinic with doctors, nurses and a social team who are here for your well-being and to understand your needs. They welcome low-income Calgarians without a family doctor, as well as Indigenous and LGBTQ2S+ Calgarians of all income levels. They are accepting new patients to be added to their waitlist.

The Women’s Centre of Calgary provides support for women seeking help with income, housing, food insecurity, and basic needs.

Calgary Moms — Provides an online community for mothers in the Calgary area.

Calgary Newcomers Club — Provides women with an opportunity to attend activities and events with other women in Calgary. The membership also provides a newsletter for women.

Calgary GIRLTALK Women’s Group — Events for women who are looking for connection and community involvement.

Childen’s Link provides resources, support, programs and connections that change lives for the better. We are committed to meeting you where you are at, helping you to clarify your needs, and equipping you to move forward by assisting you to explore options suited to your unique needs and requirements. 

Trellis — A variety of programs that encompass family development and youth empowerment.

Calgary Public Library — Free access to books, DVDs, magazines, and newspapers; computer and internet access; free programs and events for all ages; meeting rooms; and career resources.

Closer to Home Community Resource — Family services designed to meet the needs of families, youth and indigenous individuals to promote greater family cohesion.

CUPS Calgary Society — Offers a variety of resources such as emotional support, health services, economic support and developmental programs for children and their caregivers.

Women in Need Society (WINS) — Upon referral may shop for basic goods at no cost at one of the local thrift stores, this includes a $50 delivery fee for furniture items. Family Resource Centers provide families with barrier free access to essential programs, services and resources that improve and support wellbeing.

Centre for Newcomers supports immigrants of all nationalities in Calgary, helping them with resources to succeed.

YWCA is an organization that provides a wealth of information, resources, and assistance to single mothers. Their mission is to be a turning point for women, and they are equipped with up-t0-date information about legal issues, shelters, child care, employment assistance, and more! Under some programs, they also can provide you with a free fitness pass to their facilities.

Jumpstart helps kids overcome financial and accessibility barriers to sport and recreation in an effort to provide inclusive play for kids of all abilities.

Fair Entry is the City of Calgary’s subsidized program for low income Calgaryians. Programs include:

  • Recreation Fee Assistance

  • Calgary Transit Low Income Transit Pass

  • Property Tax Assistance

  • No Cost Spay/Neuter

  • Calgary Parking Low-Income Market Permit

Youth Central is a Calgary non-profit that empowers youth to find and build their communities. Through their different programs, Youth Central offers volunteer and leadership opportunities to youth aged 12-18. Their goal as an organization is to change the perception of youth in the community by giving youth the tools and support they need to become engaging, empathetic and caring citizens with a sense of ownership and responsibility. They support youth in building valuable skills for future employment, give youth a voice, and grow youth’s understanding of their community.

Youth Central’s Cinderella Project celebrates aspiring graduates as we fit them with formal attire including dresses and accessories to attend their high school graduation ceremonies. Since 2006, this program has discreetly enabled students in need to graduate with pride and confidence with their peers.
